RISE OF HOMELESS KIDS IN THE STREETS OF NAIROBI (Kenya’s capital city)

There is a rampant increase of homeless children in streets of Nairobi. This is as a result of lack of housing, the inability to pursue education, high cost of living and lack of normal parent care. As a result, these children resort to living in the streets whereby they can beg for money and do hard labor.

It is so unfortunate and heartbreaking when these kids seek solace in drugs. They end up being addicts while others lose their lives in the process and also contract diseases like HIV / AIDS.

This is what we got from the interviews:

John Mbugua, a homeless boy said,” the challenges I face in the streets are shelter, food and sometimes clothing. The police beat us every time. I cope with these challenges by getting shelter along buildings, where I cannot be bothered by the police. For me I will be grateful if I can get someone to help me acquire education or capital.

John Maina said“ We’re beaten by the police. I sleep along the streets. I pick food from dust bins.I want someone to help me join school and play football.”

Dennis Mwangi, also homeless, described the same challenges. “The police chase us away during the night. I take life as it is. I sleep at Jevanjee gardens. I get food by begging from by passers. I want a job to develop myself.

The government and NGOs that run programs about children affairs and their welfare should take it upon themselves to salvage these children from the streets and take them to rehabilitation centers. These children can serve a better purpose in life when given a chance in education, practicing artisan jobs and pursue their talents and hobbies as normal children.
